A dismantling in three acts, inspired by Johann Strauss
Theater performance with music by Theaterkollektiv Hybrid
World premiere
For ROMAbaron – NO G**** BARON, author and actor Simonida Selimović has developed a radical reinterpretation of Johann Strauss’ famous operetta. It challenges the stereotypes of the original version that continue to have an effect today, in particular clichéd images of the Roma, and makes suppressed realities visible in an alternative narrative.
The piece centres around a young Turkish Romni who explores her identity, her culture and her self-determination. In his production, director Alireza Daryanavard throws light on social power relations and ongoing discrimination.
The music by Mahan Mirarab combines classical and contemporary styles, electronica and the great variety of Roma music, and is interpreted live by renowned singers Golnar Shahyar, Sakina Teyna, Özlem Bulut and Basma Jabr.
