A dismantling in three acts, inspired by Johann Strauss
Theater performance with music by Theaterkollektiv Hybrid
World premiere
ROMABARON - KEIN Z*******BARON is a radical reinterpretation of Johann Strauss' famous operetta. It scrutinises the stereotypes of the original version that are still effective today, in particular clichéd images of the Roma, and makes repressed realities visible in an alternative narrative.
At the centre of the operetta rewrite is Saffi, a young Romni who comes to terms with her identity, culture and self-determination.
Director Alireza Daryanavard's production sheds light on social power relations and the continuity of discrimination.
The music by Mahan Mirarab combines classical music with contemporary styles, electronics and the diversity of Roma music and is interpreted by the renowned singers Özlem Bulut, Basma Jabr, Golnar Shahyar and Sakina Teyna.
The theatre collective Hybrid was founded by director and author Alireza Daryanavard and brings together interdisciplinary artists who deal with socio-political issues.
