When dreams learned to waltz
Johann Strauss’ melodies are eminently singable, their rhythms as foot-tapping as modern dance music. They have inspired many song texts. Here the focus is on children. What lyrics would a child come up with for the First Thoughts waltz, written when Strauss was six? This year, over 900 Viennese school children will be engaging with Strauss‘ melodies. The Superar initiative involved in the project sets out to make music a lasting component in young people’s lives. In different languages, the pupils at the Superar schools tell their stories about this sumptuous music and its opulent venues. The presence of Tanz die Toleranz (”Dance for All“) means that these concerts will appeal to all the senses. All over Vienna, youngsters will be performing their own versions of Strauss‘ waltzes, polkas and quadrilles. There will also be a picture-book presenting the stories behind the new songs. It tells how young Jo discovers music through Strauss‘ compositions and encourages its young readers to follow suit.
