Winner of two Olivier Awards, a Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award, and nominated for a Tony Award, choreographer and director Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui works across many forms of performance including contemporary dance, theatre, ballet, opera and music. After seven successful seasons as ballet director at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, Cherkaoui now leads the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève. Since the 2022/2023 season, under his leadership, the Ballet has embraced a distinctly contemporary style, incorporating live music, spoken word, visual arts, and haute couture. He also directs his own contemporary dance company, Eastman. Cherkaoui collaborates with top ballet and opera houses such as the Dutch National Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, The Royal Ballet, and Bayerische Staatsoper. His work extends to musical artists like Beyoncé, Madonna, Depeche Mode, and Woodkid, feature films by directors Joe Wright, Lukas Dhont, and the duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, and circus productions for Cirque du Soleil. His renowned musicals include "Jagged Little Pill" and "Starmania." His a]inity for ballet and opera has produced some of his most enduring works and exciting interdisciplinary collaborations with visual artists, designers, and musicians.
