Rainer Vierlinger

Produktionsleitung

Rainer Vierlinger, born in Upper Austria in 1967, studied biology to become a teacher and worked in nature conservation and ecology projects before his passions for theatre and music developed into a career in 2000.
He began his career with five years as an assistant to Hans Gratzer at the Schauspielhaus Vienna, the Volksoper Vienna, the Salzburg Festival and the Theater in der Josefstadt. This was followed by assistantships with Achim Freyer, Sven Eric Bechtolf, Philipp & Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Martin Kušej, Stefan Ruzowitzky, Robert Carsen, Karl Markovics, Keith Warner, Peter Konwitschny and Torsten Fischer at the Vienna State Opera, the Zurich Opera, the Styriarte, the Salzburg and Bregenz Festivals, the film Atmen and, between 2007 and 2019, many times at the Theater an der Wien.

In 2012, he directed the world premiere of the chamber opera Premiere (music: Tristan Schulze), for which he also wrote the libretto. He continues to work as a theatre all-rounder (opera chorus, libretto, rehearsals, production, dramaturgy) and has been increasingly directing his own works since 2015: The children's opera Hilfe, Hilfe, die Globolinks! (G.C. Menotti) with the Vienna Boys' Choir at MuTh Vienna; the staged song cycle Tell me on a Sunday (A. Lloyd Webber) at Oper Graz; Der Kaiser von Atlantis (V. Ullmann) at Theater an der Wien/Kammeroper; a staged version of Carmina burana (C. Orff) at the Theater an der Rott/Bavaria; two productions of the tango opera Maria de Buenos Aires (A. Piazzolla): an ‘open air version’ at the Graz Opera/Kasematten in 2018 and an ‘indoor version’ at the Lübeck Theatre in 2019. In 2020, the double bill La Voix Humaine (F. Poulenc) / The Telephone (G. C. Menotti) can be realised there despite the Covid pandemic; in 2021, Eine Winterreise, the staged version of Schubert's song cycle, will be created at the Theater an der Rott. The premieres in 2023 will be dedicated to the Theresienstadt children's opera Brundibar (H. Krasa) in a school project at the BRG Rohrbach/OÖ and Jedermann for young people at the Salzburg Festival; in 2024, the focus will be on the operetta rarity Die Stumme Serenade by Erich W. Korngold (Kulturfabrik Helfenberg/OÖ).
