The actor and author began his theatrical career with the "Karawane Salzburg". At 18, he joined the Salzburg State Theatre, followed by engagements at theatres across Germany, from Munich to Hamburg. In 1998, Helmuth Lohner brought him to Vienna’s Theater in der Josefstadt, where he has since portrayed leading roles in both classical and modern repertoire. In 2001, he received the European Cultural Award, and in 2023 he was awarded the Raimund Ring and the honorary title of Kammerschauspieler (Chamber Actor).
Michael Dangl has performed at the Salzburg, Reichenau, and Bregenz Festivals. He appears in film and television productions, writes and narrates literary texts for the Austrian radio station Ö1, and creates recital programs—placing special emphasis on collaborations with musicians. His concert appearances include performances with Gidon Kremer, Jordi Savall, Rafael Fingerlos, Nicolas Altstaedt, Julia Hagen, as well as with Kremerata Baltica, Concentus Musicus Wien, and Klangforum Wien, at prestigious venues such as the Vienna Musikverein, Vienna Konzerthaus, Theater MUTH and Akzent, Kultursommer Semmering, Theater im Park, Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival, Styriarte Graz, Menuhin Festival Gstaad, Gmunden Festival Weeks, among others.
He also shares the stage with his wife, flutist Maria Fedotova, in programs that merge his literary and musical passions (e.g. Casanova, The Nightingale, 7 Minutes Before Christmas), as well as in collaborations with Konstantin Wecker—such as The Sound of Unplayed Notes at the Gärtnerplatz State Theatre in Munich.
At the same venue, since 2018, he has played Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady and the role of "Frosch" in Die Fledermaus (a co-production with the Teatro Maggio Musicale in Florence). In Moscow, he performed the role of "Frosch" in Russian at the Great Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. Together with Maria Köstlinger and Christoph Pauli, he tours with their chanson program Love Is Also a Theatre.
Michael Dangl is also an accomplished author of books and plays. His bestseller Grado – Off the Beaten Path is now in its 8th edition. His new novel about Johann Strauss, The Waltz Maker, was recently published and presented as part of the Johann Strauss Year. As part of the celebrations, Michael Dangl helped shape a special evening with Diana Damrau in the Great Hall of the Vienna Musikverein and at the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden.
