
Michael Brandstätter studied conducting and composition in his home town of Graz. His teachers included Wolfgang Bozic, Arturo Tamayo as well as Beat Furrer, Georg Friedrich Haas and Bernhard Lang. In 1997, he went to St. Petersburg, where he continued his conducting studies with Ilya Musin and Alexander Pollychuk. His first engagement took him to Graz Opera, where he was able to develop a broad repertoire of operas, operettas and musicals as a conductor and solo repetiteur. From 2007, he conducted “Ariadne auf Naxos”, “Lʼincoronazione di Poppea”, “Tosca”, “Boris Godunov” and the world premiere of the revised version of Herbert Willis' “Schlafes Bruder” as principal conductor at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt.
Since the 2012/2013 season, Michael Brandstätter has been Principal Conductor and Deputy Principal Conductor at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, where he has conducted productions including “Im weißen Rössl”, “Dornröschen”, “Martha”, “Anything Goes”, “Der Bettelstudent”, “Berlin 1920 - Eine Burleske”, “Die Entführung aus dem Serail”, “Wiener Blut”, “Dr. Faust jr.”, ‘Aida’, ‘Così fan tutte’, ‘La Cenerentola’, ‘Viktoria und ihr Husar’, ‘Die Faschingsfee’ as well as the world premieres of ‘Der Flaschengeist’, ‘Peter Pan’ and ‘Liliom’.
