Mia Zabelka


Austrian violinist and composer Mia Zabelka is at the forefront of international electro-acoustic performance art. She received her first violin lessons at the age of seven and, in addition to her classical studies with Alexander Arenkov at the Vienna Conservatory, began playing in jazz and rock bands. She then studied counterpoint and harmony with Kurt Schwertsik as well as electroacoustic music with Dieter Kaufmann and composition with Roman Haubenstock-Ramati at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Since her first release SOMATEME the Austrian violinist and composer has used live electronics and other innovative playing techniques in her musical language to discover sound and noise as physical phenomena based on the possibilities of deconstruction and reconstruction of the violin sound.
In 2007 she founded Klanghaus, a center for sound art and interdisciplinary art in Southern Styria. Since 2009 she has been the artistic director of phonofemme Vienna, an international festival in the field of experimental music and sound art by women. In 2015 she became President of SFIEMA. Mia Zabelka has been Vice President of the Austrian Composers' Association (ACOM) since 2019.
She has collaborated with international artists from diverse musical genres, including the ensemble Zeitkratzer and John Zorn. She has given concerts throughout Europe, America and Asia. Her numerous CD and Vinyl releases have been praised by the international press for years. Recipient of highly regarded prizes. Recently her composition ‘For Pauline Oliveros’ commissioned by musikprotokoll / Steirischer Herbst and the Austrian Cultural Forum New York was honored with THE AKADEMIA Music Award 2018. In 2021, Mia Zabelka was awarded the Austrian Art Prize in the category “music” by the Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, Civil Service and Sport.
