Mahan Mirarab is a musician and composer. He grew up in Tehran and lives in Vienna. When listening to Mirarab play his two-necked guitar, European elements of chamber music are combined with contemporary forms of jazz. They open up a new interpretation of classical Iranian music.
He represents a generation of young musicians with a migrant background in Europe who are changing the boundaries of sound in the music industry and advocating more diversity in terms of quality, dialog and creativity. His aim is to tell a new story through music in relation to Middle Eastern cultures and jazz.
His compositions and arrangements display a very personal blend of rhythms and harmonies that showcase his rich musical vocabulary and profound knowledge of many different musical styles. Mirarab composes, arranges and performs in many jazz, experimental, acoustic/electronic, folk and traditional projects as well as in film, dance and theater.
Jazz is therefore defined by Mirarab as a kind of philosophy. “It's a way of solidarity, how to fight for your identity. As a migrant in Europe, I bring strong influences from my cultural background,” says Mirarab. ”Through the philosophy of jazz, I find my own language that helps me break out of traditional conventions.”
