Franz Gürtelschmied

Starting from the Young Singers Project at the Salzburg Festival, the young Viennese tenor, who studied at the University of Music in his hometown, has developed a versatile international career that has taken him to major houses such as the Opéra Bastille in Paris, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Budapest Wagner Days at the MÜPA, the Oper Leipzig, the Musiktheater Linz, the Styriarte, and the Oper Graz, as well as many other important theaters.

He has sung the Steersman in Wagner's The Flying Dutchman, the Young Sailor and Shepherd in Tristan and Isolde, Pedrillo in Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio, in The Magic Flute, and in Ravel's L'heure espagnole, as well as the lyrical tenor role of the Baron in Lortzing's The Poacher (Der Wildschütz).

In addition, he dedicates himself intensively to contemporary music theater with his role interpretations, such as in Krenek's Pallas Athene Weeps (awarded the Austrian Music Theater Prize), Eötvös’ Angels in America, and Gerd Kühr's Stallerhof at the Neue Oper Wien.

A particular focus for Gürtelschmied lies in the concert repertoire: he regularly performs as a tenor soloist with renowned presenters such as the Wiener Konzerthaus and the Musikverein, interpreting works such as Handel's Messiah, Bach's Mass in B minor, Mozart's Requiem, Mendelssohn's Hymn of Praise (Lobgesang), Bruckner's Te Deum, and Haydn's The Creation, which he also performed under conductor Ádám Fischer.

Following his passion for art song, he develops exciting recitals — currently featuring Schubert and Strauss songs, Beethoven's An die ferne Geliebte, and Schumann's Dichterliebe, which he has presented at the Wiener Liederherbst and in the Netherlands.

He is equally at home in musical theater and operetta: his repertoire includes the title role in The Gypsy Baron, Rosillon in The Merry Widow, Edwin in The Csárdás Princess, as well as Tony in Bernstein's West Side Story and the C-tenor role of Pirelli in Sondheim's Sweeney Todd.

At the turn of the year 2025, Franz Gürtelschmied made his debut at New Year's galas at the Lincoln Center in New York and in Washington, and he also welcomed the Strauss Year at the Lucerne KKL with the Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra.

In the near future, his debut as the Italian Singer in Der Rosenkavalier and in Rameau's Castor et Pollux is scheduled.
