Esther Bialas studied COSTUME DESIGN in Hamburg at the Armgartstraße University of Applied Sciences under Prof. Dirk von Bodisco and Prof. Marianne Stromberg.

She began her career in 1996 in the off-theater scene in Berlin and Hamburg. Socio-political themes and low budget solutions define her time as a set designer. Her numerous costume designs for drama director Nicolas Stemann shaped the aesthetics of the HAMBURGER SCHULE theater in the 2000s.

She became a stage designer after working as an assistant to Wilfried Minks, among others, and in the course of co-founding the independent THEATERKOLLEKTIV LaborLavache. Their subjects range from adaptations of classics to dramatizations of novels.
The group has received several awards and Esther is a set designer at Marthaler's Schauspielhaus Zurich.

Various productions by GRUPPE STEMANN, including world premieres by Elfriede Jelinek, have been invited to the BERLIN THEATERTREFFEN, the SALZBURGER FESTSPIELEN and the RUHRTRIENNALE. He has worked at the Burgtheater, the Deutsches Theater Berlin, the Thalia Theater Hamburg and the Theater Basel, among many others.
Productions at major houses of musical theater follow - opera, musical, dance and operetta expand the genres of her projects.

She has created opulent costume and set designs for opera directors such as Barrie Kosky, Stefan Herheim, Martin G. Berger, Sigrid Strøm Reibo, Daniel Kramer and Christian Räth, including ZAUBERFLÖTE at the Komische Oper Berlin, which has since traveled around the world. Engagements have taken her from Bregenz to Basel, from Oslo to Lyon and Los Angeles to New York.

In 2019, she developed “Nico an The Navigators”, an augmented reality performance in the Dessau Masters' Houses to mark the 100th anniversary of BAUHAUS.

She received a PENTIMENT scholarship from Professor Sabine Tschierschki in fashion drawing. To the delight of the cineaste, she has made a number of side leaps into cinema and television.

Her work has repeatedly been named best costume design in THEATER HEUTE. She taught costume design at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg.
