Vienna-based Latvian alto Helēna Sorokina specializes in contemporary vocal music and performance, concert singing and chanson. Since 2020, she has been developing and presenting the VOICE.ONLY project, an innovative contemporary concert series and a research project of the same name at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, which explores the various facets, techniques and types of notation of the contemporary singing voice. An award-winning part of this is Shades of Solitude with over 50 unaccompanied solo works newly composed for her alto voice and premiered by her. Since 2022 she has held the position of University Assistant at the Center for Artistic Research at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. She has been the alto of the renowned vocal ensemble for early and new music Cantando Admont since 2017. Performances and lectures have taken her to the Salzburg Festival, Teatro Colon Buenos Aires, Wiener Konzerthaus, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Kölner Philharmonie, Onassis Center in Athens, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Wien Modern, Vilnius 700, Klangspuren Schwaz, UC Berkeley, Yale-NUS College Singapore, New York University, CalArts, UC Davis, among others. In 2025, she can be heard at the Salzburg Festival, the Zurich Opera, the Eclat Festival in Stuttgart, Wien Modern and Skaņu Mežs in Riga, among others.
