Alex Frei is from Locarno (Switzerland) and trained in Munich, at the Academy of Arts in Amsterdam and the Alvin Ailey School in New York. He was a soloist with Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal and the Augsburg Ballet, worked with the Béjart Ballet Lausanne and with Philip Taylor, Blanca Li and Carolyn Carlson, among others. He was in numerous musical productions such as 42nd Street, Marilyn, La Cage aux Folles, Cats, Cabaret and Chicago. Since 2020 he has been assistant choreographer and rehearsal director at Gärtnerplatztheater. In 2021, he completed his master's degree in opera directing at the Accademia dell'Opera di Verona and was assistant director for Die Fledermaus at Teatro del Maggio Musicale in Florence. His most recent work includes Next to Normal and La Cage aux Folles at Bühnen Bern, Die Kleine Meerjungfrau at Kempten Theater, the new operetta Oh! Oh! Amelio at Gärtnerplatztheater and Mozart! at Prinzregententheater in Munich.
