Alex Frei comes from Locarno (Switzerland) and trained in Munich, at the Academy of Arts in Amsterdam and at the Alvin Ailey School in New York. He was a soloist with Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal and the Augsburg Ballet, a guest artist with the Béjart Ballet Lausanne and worked with Philip Taylor, Blanca Li and Carolyn Carlson, among others. He has worked in numerous musical productions such as 42nd Street, Marilyn, La Cage aux Folles, Cats, Cabaret and Chicago. He has been a choreographic assistant and rehearsal director at the Gärtnerplatztheater since 2020. In 2021 he completed his master's degree in opera directing at the Accademia dell'Opera di Verona and was assistant director for Die Fledermaus at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale in Florence. Alex Frei choreographed Next to Normal and La Cage aux Folles at the Bühnen Bern and Die kleine Meerjungfrau at the Theater in Kempten. His most recent works include the new operetta Oh! Oh! Amelio at the Gärtnerplatztheater and Mozart! at the Prinzregententheater in Munich.
