Lukas Karzel studied solo voice with Manfred Equiluz and Bartolo Musil at the MUK (Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna). He made his first stage appearance at the age of six as the “little boy” in Johnny Johnson (Neue Oper Wien). He then appeared in the children’s ensemble and choir of the Volksoper Wien. In 2005, he played “Louis Leonowens” in The King and I (Festspiele Stockerau). He later received training with the Vienna Boys’ Choir, where he performed as a soprano soloist.
He has appeared in various Nestroy productions, including Lumpazivagabundus, Das Mädl aus der Vorstadt (Theater Sommer Parndorf), Der Zerrissene (tour), and Einen Jux will er sich machen (Festspiele Stockerau). Other stage credits include Jedermann and The Servant of Two Masters (Der Diener zweier Herren) at Theater Sommer Parndorf.
His engagements include “Alfred” and “Clem” in The Little Sweep (MuTh), “Arlequine Aîné” in the rarely performed opera Les Jumeaux de Bergame by Jacques Dalcroze, presented as part of a symposium at the MDW and in Katowice, “Leon” in The Canterville Ghost (Volksoper Wien), and “Anton” in the world premiere of Anton und Maria (Seefestspiele Mörbisch). He also performed “Alfred” in Die Fledermaus (MUK), one of the two agents, “Marchand,” in The Count of Luxembourg (Der Graf von Luxemburg, Herbsttage Blindenmarkt), “Vincenz” in Der fidele Bauer (Stadttheater Bad Hall), “Enrico” in A Night in Venice (Eine Nacht in Venedig, Herbsttage Blindenmarkt), and “Mack the Knife” (Mackie Messer) in The Threepenny Opera (Stadttheater Murau).
In January 2024, he played “Levin” in the world premiere of Elektrische Fische, a mobile youth opera by the Vienna State Opera. He appeared in The Merry Widow (Die lustige Witwe) at Vereinigte Bühnen Bozen in the Stadttheater and portrayed “Dr. Siedler” in Im weißen Rössl at the Schloss Tabor Festival.
His most recent engagements include “Joe Fraunhofer” in Maske in Blau at the Herbsttage Blindenmarkt, multiple roles in The Trial (Der Prozess) at the Kammeroper Wien / Theater an der Wien, and again “Levin” in Elektrische Fische at "Nest", the Vienna State Opera’s new venue.
In autumn 2023, Lukas Karzel won the Heinrich Strecker Competition / Crossover Competition in the musical category.
He is also part of the high-energy pop/rock a cappella group “Das wird super”, currently on tour with Pizzera & Jaus and featured on their third album.
