
Born in Mashhad in 1983 and raised in the northern Iranian province of Mazandaran, Misagh Joolaee began playing the violin at the age of eight. Within 5 years, he completed his studies of the Persian classical repertoire “Radif”. At 13, he won the Fadjr music competition in Iran. He also studied with various Iranian masters Setar, Tar and especially intensively Kamancheh. This was followed by training on the piano and violin in European classical music.
His musical career is characterized by a great versatility in the collaboration with musicians of different styles. In 2009, he founded the ensemble “AAVAAN”, with which he performed his own compositions and won the “Creole - Global Music” competition in 2010.
In 2022, he founded the Joolaee Trio with Schaghajegh Nosrati and Sebastian Flaig. The trio gave its acclaimed debut at the Rudolstadt Festival 2022, followed by further concerts at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Heidelberger Frühling, Sendesaal Bremen and Pierre Boulez Saal Berlin, among others.
As a soloist, he appeared in 2014 as Kamancheh soloist in the performance of Awet Terterjan's 5th Symphony with the Braunschweig State Orchestra in the Braunschweig Stadthalle.
He was also invited to perform with Capella Amsterdam as part of a tour of Holland in fall 2021.
In 2023, Joolaee performed the world premiere of the Concerto for Kamancheh and Orchestra, composed by Henning Bundies, with the TU Orchestra Braunschweig.
Between 2011 and 2014, Joolaee was a lecturer at the Center for World Music at the University of Hildesheim.
Joolaee was awarded the prestigious German Record Critics' Award four times between 2020 and 2025.
